Hotel Retreat and Spa

The proposal for the Plas Meini Estate was for a Hotel Retreat & Spa for stressed Adults. The estate sits in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park and these Conservation areas are cherished places for physical, mental and spiritual Rejuvenation. Due to these ‘protected landscapes being the UK’s finest gems’ (Glover, 2018) and with 66% of us living within half an hour of a National Park or AONB (Hygate, 2017) their potential going into the future needs to be realised.

Therefore I designed four main interventions for the Manor House (which sits at the head of the estate with the best views). These include the Hillside Viewing House and the Indoor-Outdoor Pool.

They have been designed to maximise the experience for the paying guests and showcase the specialty of the site. None of the proposals have a long-term impact on the environment. From facing the facade and the rear of the building there is almost no above-ground level change. The new glasswork on the interventions also interchange via a series of manual shutters to suit varying weather conditions. These also aid the transition from day to night to stop light pollution affecting the night sky (protected by the designated dark sky status). The first and second floor of the Manor House were slightly reconfigured to provide en-suits for all bedrooms.
